Raj and Sashi came to the far western Sta. Rita hills with a hunch that its marginal climate and seabed soils would be propitious to elegant, distinctive Pinot Noir.
Nowhere is this felt more than standing in, and tasting, Bloom's Field. Sheared by wind, sitting on a quilt of churned up marine rock and river sediment with a view of choppy surf, this parcel shows a briny, ethereal quality in the glass from miniaturized grape clusters conditioned by their climate.
In 2017, a group of the world's most recognized Wine Industry professionals got together to asses the top Pinot Noirs of the world. When the top three winners of this tasting were presented to Masters of Wine Jancis Robinson, Fred Dame, and Steven Spurrier, Jancis proclaimed that Domaine de la Côte's Bloom's Field was her choice for the top wine, commenting:
While whole cluster fermentation may stamp the Domaine de la Côte Pinots in their youth, this 2014 testifies to the glorious complexity that evolves when the wines are allowed to mature. Youthful greenness becomes a heady perfume of cinnamon and clove, earth, forest, dried roses, and oolong tea. These deep, savory aromas form the backdrop against which the core fruits blossom. Present since the wine’s release—but now gloriously burnished by time—ripe, sun-warmed strawberry and red cherry announce themselves in the nose and then carry on into the palate, where the spicy earth and mineral notes again gently contain the fruit’s exuberance. Tannins are polished, endowing the wine with a satisfying presence on the tongue. This wine will continue to evolve, yet today and for the next year or two seem optimal times to drink it, if pure, ecstatic pleasure is your goal.
